Paver Patio Installation in Winnipeg

Every paver patio in this city is a bet against Red River clay. The ones still flat in year ten were not laid better, they were excavated deeper, and that decision was made before a single stone arrived.

The Patio You See Is the Last Four Inches

Two patios can look identical the day they are finished and be completely different builds. One sits on a base cut deep into the clay, compacted in layers, with a proper bedding course and a locked edge. The other sits on whatever came out of the ground, levelled by eye. You cannot tell them apart in a photo. You can tell them apart after three winters, and by then one of them is a dip you walk around.
Red River clay is the reason. It swells when wet, shrinks when dry, and heaves when it freezes, and it does all of that under whatever you build on top of it. The answer is not a thicker stone, it is more excavation and a base that gives the frost somewhere to go. That is the single biggest cost difference between a quote that looks high and one that looks reasonable, and it is the part nobody can see once we leave.
There is one more thing specific to newer Winnipeg homes. The ground within a metre or two of your foundation is builder backfill, dropped in after the basement was poured and rarely compacted properly. It is the softest ground on the property and it is exactly where your patio meets the house. If that strip is not dealt with deliberately, the patio settles at the back door first. We deal with it deliberately.

Why Winnipeg Homeowners Choose Genesis for Paver Patios

Base Built for Clay

Excavation depth is set for your soil and your use, not for a number that makes the quote competitive. On Winnipeg clay that means going deeper than most, and compacting in layers rather than all at once.

CMHA Certified Installer

Tyler is certified by the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association, formerly ICPI, and a Belgard Authorized Installer. The standards your patio is built to are published, not invented on site.

The Backfill Strip Handled

The ground against your foundation is the softest on the property. We over excavate and rebuild that strip rather than laying over it and hoping, because that is where patios drop first.

Graded to Move Water

Every patio is pitched away from the house at a fall you will never feel underfoot but water will always find. Standing water on clay is how a good base turns into a bad one.

Owner on Every Site

Tyler is on every project. The person who set your excavation depth is standing there while the base goes in, which is the only part of the job you will never be able to inspect yourself.

No rushed timelines

Our warranty covers the build: excavation, base, bedding, laying, cutting, edge restraint and jointing. Paving stones carry their own manufacturer warranty, which we register for you.

Paving Stones and What Sits Under Them

You choose the top. We are responsible for everything below it, and that is where the project is won or lost.

Barkman, Belgard and Techo-Bloc

Barkman is manufactured here in Manitoba and goes into most of our installs, which means colour matching and replacements years from now are realistic rather than a hunt. Belgard and Techo-Bloc open up larger format slabs and finishes when the design calls for them.

Excavation, Base and Jointing

Everything that decides the life of your patio happens before the first stone. Excavation to depth, geotextile where the clay demands it, base compacted in layers, a screeded bedding course, then laying, cutting, edge restraint and polymeric sand to lock the joints.

Replacing a patio that has started to settle?

Settling is a base problem, not a stone problem. Book a site visit and we will tell you honestly whether it is a lift and relay or a full rebuild.

How We Build a Paver Patio

Most of the work happens below grade, before anything looks like a patio. Here is how a Genesis patio comes together from your first call to handover.

Free Quote

You call or submit a form with your project scope and location. Tyler or a team member responds within one business day with questions and preliminary guidance. If it sounds like a fit, we move to a site visit.

Site Visit & Design

Tyler visits the site, walks the grade, checks where water goes after a storm, and looks at access for machines and material. Patio size and shape are laid out on the ground with marking paint, and stone, pattern and border options are discussed in person with samples available.

Proposal, Permitting, & Scheduling

A detailed line-item proposal covers excavation, base, materials, labour and disposal, with a layout plan included and the excavation depth stated in writing. Once approved, we lock in a confirmed start date and order materials.

Excavation and Base

Utility locates are called first. We excavate to depth, place geotextile where the clay requires it, and build the base in compacted layers rather than one deep lift. The grade is set to fall away from the house before any bedding goes down.

Laying, Cutting & Final Walkthrough

Stones are laid to the pattern, cut cleanly at every edge, locked with edge restraint and jointed with polymeric sand. The patio is compacted, swept and washed down. Tyler walks it with you, explains the warranty and how the joints will settle in over the first season.

What Winnipeg Homeowners Say

Paver Patios Across Winnipeg and Surrounding Communities

Genesis serves Winnipeg homeowners city-wide and across the north-corridor suburbs. Below are the primary communities where we regularly design and build paver patios, for both residential and commercial properties.

Common Questions About Working With Genesis

Patios are priced by the square foot, and the number moves with size, the stone you choose, how much cutting the shape demands, and how deep we have to excavate for your soil. Access matters too, since a yard a machine cannot reach is a yard dug by hand. We provide free ballpark estimates by phone or email once you can share your rough size, and final pricing always requires an on-site visit.
Pavers, for Winnipeg specifically. Poured concrete is one rigid slab, so when the clay moves it cracks and a crack cannot be repaired invisibly. A paver patio is thousands of small pieces with flexible joints, so it moves with the ground instead of against it, and any section can be lifted and relaid years later.
A properly built one settles slightly and evenly in its first season as the joints lock up, and then stops. What you want to avoid is localised sinking, which is almost always a base that was too shallow or a backfill strip near the house that was never rebuilt. Both are decisions made during excavation.
It covers our build: excavation, base preparation, bedding, laying, cutting, edge restraint and jointing. Paving stones carry their own manufacturer warranty from Barkman, Belgard or Techo-Bloc, which we register and hand to you at closeout.
