Mulch Installation in Winnipeg

Mulch is the finish line of a landscape build, not a shortcut. We install it at the correct depth over properly prepared beds with clean, contained edges, so your planting looks intentional and your soil holds moisture through a Winnipeg summer.

Mulch Done as Part of the Build, Not as an Afterthought

Most mulch problems in Winnipeg are not mulch problems. They are bed problems. Mulch spread over compacted clay with no edge, no grade and no soil preparation will wash into the lawn by the second heavy rain, pile up against plant stems, and look tired before the season ends. The material gets blamed for work that was never done underneath it.
We approach mulch the same way we approach a paver patio. The bed gets excavated to the right depth, the soil gets amended where planting needs it, the edge gets built so the mulch stays where we put it, and only then does the mulch go down. Two to three inches (5 to 7.5 cm) across the bed, pulled back from trunks and stems, feathered clean against every hard edge.
Being clear about scope: mulch installation is part of a landscape build for us, not a standalone service call. If your beds are already built and you need a seasonal top up, a maintenance company is the right fit. If you are building new beds, planting a new property, or finishing a patio and retaining wall project and want the softscape done to the same standard, that is our work.

Why Winnipeg Homeowners Choose Genesis for Mulch

Correct Depth, Every Bed

Body: Two to three inches is the range that suppresses weeds and holds moisture without suffocating roots. Thinner and weeds push straight through. Thicker and water stops reaching the soil. We measure rather than eyeball it.

Beds Prepared First

Excavation, grading and soil amendment happen before any mulch arrives. Winnipeg clay drains slowly, so bed depth and slope decide whether your plants thrive or sit in water.

Edges That Contain It

Mulch needs something to hold it. We finish beds with a spade cut edge, paver soldier course, or steel edging depending on the design, so the line stays crisp and the mulch stays in the bed.

Pulled Back From Stems

Mulch volcanoes piled against trunks trap moisture and invite rot and rodents. We keep material back from every trunk and crown so the plant collar breathes.

Owner on Every Site

Tyler is on every project, including the finishing work. The person who designed your bed layout is the person checking the depth and the edge before the crew leaves.

No rushed timelines

Our workmanship warranty covers the build: the bed construction, the grading, the edging. Mulch is an organic material that breaks down over time, and we tell you that upfront rather than overselling it.

Mulch Options We Install

Different beds want different material. We match the mulch to the planting, the exposure and the look you are after.

Shredded Bark and Wood Chip

The standard choice for planting beds. Shredded bark knits together and holds on a slope better than loose chip, which makes it a good fit for graded Winnipeg yards. It breaks down into the soil over a few seasons and improves structure as it goes.

What Sits Under the Mulch

The mulch is the last two inches of a bed that is often eight or more inches deep. Soil quality, grade away from the foundation, and the edge detail are what make a bed last. We build those first and treat mulch as the top layer of a finished assembly.

How We Install Mulch

Mulch goes down last, but the work that decides how it performs happens well before the material arrives. Here is how a bed comes together on a Genesis project.

Site Walk and Bed Layout

We walk the property with you, look at where water goes after a storm, and lay out bed shapes with marking paint so you can see the lines before anything is cut.

Excavation and Grading

Beds get cut to depth and graded to move water away from the foundation and toward where you want it. On heavy clay this step matters more than the plants you choose.

Soil Preparation

We amend the bed soil to suit what is going in it. Compacted subsoil gets broken up so roots have somewhere to go rather than circling in the planting hole.

Edge Construction

The containment edge goes in before the mulch. Spade cut for a soft natural line, a paver soldier course where the bed meets a patio, or steel where a hard permanent edge suits the design.

Mulch and Final Detail

Mulch goes in at two to three inches, raked to an even depth, pulled back from every stem and trunk, and cut clean against hard edges. Site gets swept and the beds get a final walkthrough with you.

What Winnipeg Homeowners Say

Mulch Installation Across Winnipeg and Area

Winnipeg is home base. We also build throughout the surrounding communities, and the soil and drainage conditions change enough between them that every project starts with a site visit.

Common Questions About Working With Genesis

Two to three inches, or 5 to 7.5 cm. Less than that and weeds come through. More than that and water struggles to reach the roots.
Bark mulch breaks down and usually needs a top up every one to two seasons in Winnipeg. That is normal, and it is maintenance work rather than something we return for.
It reduces them significantly but nothing stops weeds completely. Seeds still blow in and germinate on top of the mulch layer.
Only in some situations. Under bark mulch it often does more harm than good because the mulch breaks down on top of it and roots cannot reach the soil. We decide per bed.
No. Mulch is part of a landscape build for us, so it comes with new bed construction, planting or a larger hardscape project.
