Pool Deck and Coping Installation in Winnipeg

The ground around a new pool is the worst base condition on any property, because every inch of it was dug out and dropped back in. That is exactly where your deck goes, and it is why pool decks settle before patios do.

Everything Around a Pool Sits on Disturbed Ground

Installing a pool means excavating a hole far larger than the shell, setting the shell, then pushing the soil back in around it. However carefully that is done, the entire perimeter is now loose, disturbed material sitting on Red River clay. It will consolidate for years. Build a deck straight onto it and the deck comes down with it, usually first at the coping, which is the one line everybody looks at.
So the deck gets built as if the ground cannot be trusted, because it cannot. We over excavate the backfill zone and rebuild it in compacted layers rather than levelling what is there. The base goes deeper near the shell than it does at the far edge. It costs more and it takes longer, and it is the entire difference between a deck that is still level at the waterline in year eight and one that is not.
The second half of the job is what your feet touch. Coping is the capped edge where the deck meets the water, and it is handled constantly, usually barefoot and usually wet. It needs a rounded bullnose with no sharp arris, a slight overhang past the waterline, and a surface that is not slick when wet or scalding in August. The deck surface itself is graded to shed water away from the pool, not into it.

Why Winnipeg Homeowners Choose Genesis for Pool Decks

Backfill Zone Rebuilt

The perimeter around the shell is over excavated and rebuilt in compacted layers. This is the step that separates a pool deck that holds its line from one that drops at the coping.

Graded Away From the Water

Fall is set so surface water, rain and splash leave the deck rather than running back into the pool carrying grit with it. On a Winnipeg pool this also means water is not sitting against the coping to freeze.

Coping Finished for Bare Feet

Rounded bullnose edges, no sharp corners, a clean overhang at the waterline, and a surface chosen for grip when wet. Coping is the part of the build you touch every single time you use the pool.

Built for a Winnipeg Winter

The deck has to survive eight months of not being used. Drainage, jointing and edge restraint are all specified with freeze and thaw in mind, not just with August in mind.

Owner on Every Site

Tyler is on every project. The person who decided how deep to rebuild your backfill zone is on site while it happens, and nobody can inspect that step after the fact.

No rushed timelines

Our warranty covers the build: excavation, base, bedding, coping setting, laying, cutting, edge restraint and jointing. Paving and coping units carry their own manufacturer warranty, which we register for you.

Coping and Deck Surfaces

Two different jobs. The coping is a precision detail. The deck is an area problem. They are priced and built differently.

The Edge at the Waterline

Coping units are purpose made with a rounded bullnose front and a consistent thickness, so the line around the pool stays true. Cutting is constant on a curved shell, and every cut shows, which is why coping takes longer per foot than anything else on the deck.

Pavers, Slabs and the Base Below

Large format slabs suit a pool deck because fewer joints means less grit working loose underfoot. Lighter colours stay noticeably cooler in August than charcoal does, which matters more here than people expect given how intense a prairie summer afternoon gets.

Putting in a pool this season?

The deck should be designed before the shell goes in the ground, not after. Book a site visit and we will plan both together.

How We Build a Pool Deck

A pool deck is a patio built on the worst ground on the property, around a fixed object that cannot move. Here is how a Genesis pool deck comes together.

You call or submit a form with your project scope and location. Tyler or a team member responds within one business day with questions and preliminary guidance. If it sounds like a fit, we move to a site visit.

Site Visit & Design

Tyler walks the pool area with you, looks at the shell, the backfill zone, access for machines, and where water currently goes. Deck shape, width around the pool, coping style and stone are discussed on site with samples available.

Proposal, Permitting, & Scheduling

A detailed line-item proposal separates coping from deck area, because they are priced differently, and states the excavation depth around the shell in writing. Once approved, we lock in a confirmed start date and order materials.

Backfill Rebuild and Base

The most important phase. We over excavate the disturbed zone around the shell and rebuild it in compacted layers, then build the deck base on top of it, grading the whole surface to fall away from the water before any bedding goes down.

Coping, Laying & Final Walkthrough

Coping is set first to a true line around the shell, then the deck field is laid out from it, cut clean, locked with edge restraint and jointed with polymeric sand. The deck is compacted, swept and washed. Tyler walks it with you and explains the warranty.

What Winnipeg Homeowners Say

Pool Decks Across Winnipeg and Surrounding Communities

Genesis serves Winnipeg homeowners city-wide and across the north-corridor suburbs. Below are the primary communities where we regularly design and build pool decks and coping, for both residential and commercial properties.

Common Questions About Working With Genesis

Pool decks are priced in two parts. Coping is priced per linear foot because it is slow, precise work with constant cutting, and the deck field is priced by the square foot like any patio. The backfill rebuild around the shell is the other variable and it depends on how the pool was installed. We provide free ballpark estimates once you can share your pool size and the deck area you want, and final pricing requires an on-site visit.
Only if the backfill zone was not rebuilt. The ground around a pool shell is loose for years after installation, which is why so many pool decks drop at the coping while the rest stays flat. Over excavating and recompacting that perimeter is the fix, and it happens before anything is laid.
Colour decides it more than material does. Charcoal and black surfaces get uncomfortably hot on a prairie afternoon, while lighter greys and buffs stay walkable. We will tell you honestly which stones in your shortlist are going to be a problem in July.
It covers our build: excavation, backfill rebuild, base preparation, bedding, coping setting, laying, cutting, edge restraint and jointing. Paving and coping units carry their own manufacturer warranty from Barkman, Belgard or Techo-Bloc, which we register and hand to you at closeout.
