Permeable Paver Installation in Winnipeg

Permeable paving works by letting water through the surface instead of pushing it somewhere else. On Red River clay that needs an honest design, because the clay underneath does not absorb water the way the brochures assume.

On Clay, a Permeable System Is Storage, Not a Drain

The idea is simple. Instead of a sealed surface that sheds water to the lowest point in your yard or out onto the street, a permeable paver surface lets rain fall straight through the joints into a deep open stone layer below. Nothing pools, nothing runs off, and the hard surface stops behaving like a roof.
The part most quotes skip is what happens next. In sandy ground the water simply soaks away into the subsoil. Red River clay does not do that, or does it so slowly it may as well not. So a permeable system built here is not a hole that drains, it is a reservoir that holds a storm’s worth of water in the stone voids and lets it go slowly, often through a controlled outlet or an underdrain we design into it. Build it as if the clay will absorb the water and you have built a bathtub.
That changes the whole build. There is no sand anywhere in the assembly, because fines are what clog a permeable system. The base is open graded clean stone sized to hold volume. The joints are filled with small clean chip rather than polymeric sand. It is a different specification from a normal patio, not a normal patio with different stones on top, and the difference is entirely invisible once it is finished.

Why Winnipeg Homeowners Choose Genesis for Permeable Paving

Designed for Clay, Not for a Brochure

We size the stone reservoir to hold the water rather than assuming the ground will take it, and we design the outlet. This is the single thing most permeable installs in this city get wrong.

No Fines Anywhere in the Build

Open graded clean stone throughout, clean chip in the joints, and no bedding sand at any layer. Fines are what turn a permeable surface into a sealed one, and they get in by being specified in.

CMHA Certified Installer

Tyler is certified by the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association, formerly ICPI, which publishes the permeable interlocking standards this work is built to.

Honest About Where Water Goes

If your lot drainage will not accept a pure infiltration design, we tell you at the site visit and price the system that will actually work, rather than selling you a surface that looks permeable and performs like concrete.

Owner on Every Site

Tyler is on every project. The depth and gradation of the stone reservoir is the whole system, and it is buried the moment it is built.

No rushed timelines

Our warranty covers the build: excavation, open graded base, reservoir construction, laying, cutting, edge restraint and jointing. Paving units carry their own manufacturer warranty, which we register for you.

Permeable Systems We Install

The surface is the smallest part of a permeable build. Almost all of the cost and all of the performance sits underneath it.

Permeable Paving Units

Permeable units are purpose made with wider joints or built in spacers so water has a route through. They are available in finishes close enough to standard paving that most people cannot tell a permeable driveway from a sealed one until it rains.

Reservoir, Outlet and Separation

The open graded stone layer is the system. It is sized to hold the volume a storm delivers, separated from the clay with geotextile, and given a way to release that volume slowly instead of sitting against your foundation.

Have a drainage problem rather than a paving problem?

Sometimes permeable paving is the answer and sometimes it is not. Book a site visit and we will tell you which one you have.

How We Build a Permeable Paver Surface

A permeable build is a drainage structure with a walking surface on top, so it starts with where the water is going to go. Here is how a Genesis permeable project comes together.

You call or submit a form with your project scope and location. Tyler or a team member responds within one business day with questions and preliminary guidance. If it sounds like a fit, we move to a site visit.

Site Visit & Drainage Assessment

Tyler walks the property, looks at where water currently collects after a storm, checks the subgrade and your lot's existing drainage, and establishes whether a pure infiltration design is realistic or whether the system needs an outlet. The area it will serve is measured, because that sets the reservoir depth.

Proposal, Permitting, & Scheduling

A detailed line-item proposal covers excavation, the stone reservoir, geotextile, any underdrain, materials and labour, with the reservoir depth and stone gradation stated in writing. Once approved, we lock in a confirmed start date.

Excavation and Reservoir

Utility locates are called first. We excavate to the full reservoir depth, lay geotextile against the clay, install any underdrain, then build the open graded stone layers and compact them without ever introducing fines.

Laying, Jointing & Final Walkthrough

Permeable units are laid, cut clean and locked with edge restraint, then the joints are filled with clean chip and the surface compacted. Tyler walks it with you, explains the warranty, and shows you how to keep the surface clear so it stays permeable.

What Winnipeg Homeowners Say

Permeable Paving Across Winnipeg and Surrounding Communities

Genesis serves Winnipeg homeowners city-wide and across the north-corridor suburbs. Below are the primary communities where we regularly design and build permeable paving, for both residential and commercial properties.

Common Questions About Working With Genesis

It costs more per square foot than standard paving, and the difference is almost entirely below grade. The excavation is deeper, the stone volume is larger, and an underdrain adds to it where the clay requires one. The trade is that you are also buying a drainage solution, so compare it against what a separate drainage fix would have cost rather than against a normal patio. Final pricing requires an on-site visit.
Yes, as long as it is designed as a storage system rather than a soakaway. Clay will not absorb water fast enough to empty a reservoir on its own, so the stone layer holds the volume and releases it slowly through an outlet or underdrain. Built that way it performs very well here. Built as pure infiltration it fills up and stays full.
The surface takes in silt, leaves and grit over the years and will slowly lose permeability if it is never cleaned. Periodic vacuuming of the joints restores it. That is maintenance work rather than something we return to do, and we tell you upfront so it is not a surprise.
It covers our build: excavation, geotextile, open graded base and reservoir construction, laying, cutting, edge restraint and jointing. Paving units carry their own manufacturer warranty from Barkman or Belgard, which we register and hand to you at closeout.
Yes. Genesis holds City of Winnipeg business licence 838851384 and carries an A rating with the Better Business Bureau. Tyler is a CMHA Certified Installer (formerly ICPI) and a Belgard Authorized Installer. We are members of the Manitoba Nursery Landscape Association.
